6 Best Davidoff Cigars (All Tastes and Budgets)

Davidoff Cigars are a symbol of opulence in the cigar community. They’re all about taking time out to enjoy the finer things in life.

My top pick this week is the Churchill Late Hour, a whiskey-laced Dominican blend that goes perfectly with a nightcap. These things taste inherently luxurious and could be sold for 3 – 4 times the price.

A mellow stogie with thick and creamy smoke.
Smooth enough for rookies, but with enough personality to keep things interesting.

If you’re a beginner, it’s worth taking a look at the Grand Cru Series for a smoother smoke that still has enough personality to keep you engaged. Similarly, the Griffin’s are an accessible budget pick to try a shorter cigar that won’t overwhelm you.

And for something a little more challenging, consider the Davidoff Nicaragua Diademas BXP. This complex smoke is tall, dark and handsome – and it tastes just as beautiful as it looks. If the Churchill Late Hour is a single malt whiskey, Diademas is a more challenging, pointed liquer.

“Time beautifully filled” indeed. Let’s get into it.

The 6 Best Davidoff Cigars

Winston Churchill Late Hour Toro – Best Davidoff Cigar Overall

Winston Churchill Late Hours are smooth and luxurious cigars, perfect for ending your night.

Winston Churchill Late Hour Toro

The medium-bodied Dominican blend comes in a Habano Oscuro wrapper laced in rich whiskey, and the flavor is absolutely moreish.

With a palate that brings notes of cocoa, spice and slight sweetness to the fore, this stogie is a great pick for anyone looking for a smoke that will offer an interesting flavor without overpowering. I love the hint of sweet cedar.

If I had to describe it in a word, it would be “moreish”. Very pleasant, with zero bitterness.

The construction is also impeccable. The wrapper is glossy and clean, and it produces a cigar with an easy draw and even burn. The ash holds like cement – it didn’t fall for me until halfway through the smoke.

Late Hour comes top of my list because it pairs so well with a single malt. If you’re looking for a partner for your nightcap, look no further.

Nicaragua Diademas BXP – Best Davidoff Cigar for Complexity

This all-Nicaraguan stogie is more complex that Late Hours – so if you like them simple, look elsewhere.

Davidoff Nicaragua Diademas BXP

But if you can handle something a little more nuanced, you’ll be rewarded by this earthy, creamy delight. Thick plumes of smoke erupt from this dark beauty, with flavors that have to be tasted to be truly believed.

Plus, it just looks beautiful as an object. You pull out one of these things and people know you mean business.

The construction is beautiful and smooth, but just be aware that the cap is a little loose – so it’s worth clipping it a fraction closer than you normally might. At least in my experience.

A touch more expensive than Late Hour, but well worth it if you’re after something a little off the beaten track with a fuller body.

Grand Cru Series No.3 – Best Davidoff Cigar for Beginners

If I had to introduce a beginner to Davidoff cigars, this is where I would start. With thick and creamy smoke, this mellow smoke is accessible without being boring.

Davidoff Grand Cru Series No.3

There are ever-so-slight inflections of spice and sweetness that will give you and the rookie something to notice and talk about, but you can be pretty sure they’ll be able to finish their smoke without feeling overpowered.

As you’ll find common across Davidoff cigars, the Grand Cru Series benefits from top-tier construction. The burn doesn’t require maintenance, the ash is firm, and the whole experience is hassle-free.

The only drawback worth noting is that this stogie can get a little harsh toward the end – but I’m really only talking about the last few hits. As long as you’re not trying to smoke it down to the nub, you’ll be absolutely fine.

The Griffin’s – Best Budget Davidoff Cigar

These small cigars are great value for money. They’re about $4 a pop, and still have the classic Davidoff Dominican flavor and quality you’ve come to expect.

The Griffins - Puritos

The smoke is smooth and mild and goes perfectly with a cup of coffee when time is short. They take about 15-20 minutes to smoke, which is perfect for me as part of my morning routine.

For the price, you’d expect Davidoff to take some shortcuts. But Griffin’s are all beautifully rolled and they draw beautifully.

You could say that the palate is a little less exciting than more complex smokes like the Nicaragua Diademas BXP, but the quality is still there. Like a high-quality vanilla ice cream, this is a straightforward flavor done well.

They come in handy tins of six that are easy to sling in your suit jacket pocket without wondering if your smokes will survive.

Millennium Robusto Tubo – Best Davidoff Cigar with Coffee Notes

Millenniums are a bolder Davidoff cigar with a signature note of coffee. It’s an intense and slightly acerbic hint that will appeal to fans of espresso – which is perfect for me, at least.

Davidoff Millennium Robusto Tubo

It’s balanced against a deeper, dark chocolaty sense for a blend that feels rich and complex.

The Ecuadorian sun-grown wrapper has a beautiful gourmand aroma that translates into the velvety smoke itself, with a slightly higher ratio of Piloto tobacco than usual for a fuller flavor.

These are great smokes to gift or bring out at parties because they’re presented beautifully. They come in cedar-lined tubes that make them look a whole lot more expensive than they are, and you can imagine the effect when you pull one out. Millenniums make an entrance in any room.

Just be careful – when I tried this one, I smoked it right down to the end and almost burnt my fingers because I just wasn’t ready to let it go.

Primeros Nicaragua Maduro – Best Maduro Davidoff Cigar

This Primero is a classic Maduro cigar, with all of the rich flavor and aroma you’d hope for.

Davidoff Primeros Nicaragua Maduro

The big chocolatey note slaps you in the face, supported by a streak of earthy hay and a touch of aromatic spice. This Nicaraguan blend is well-balanced and complex, with enough going on to keep aficionados engaged and interested.

Personally, I prefer a slightly milder cigar for my day-to-day smoke, but I’d happily pull out this stogie for a special occasion when I’m looking for something with more richness.

The smaller form factor is handy for times when you want something that tastes special, but don’t have hours to dedicate to smoking. Perfect with a glass of port or whiskey, and affordable enough to pick up without breaking the bank.

For this price, I challenge you to find another Maduro that is as satisfying.

What You Should Know About the Best Davidoff Cigars

The History Behind Davidoff Cigars

Zino Davidoff came from a good tobacco heritage. His Ukrainian family moved to Switzerland when he was young to open a tobacco shop – and it was pretty successful.

Rumour has it that Vladimir Lenin was a customer when he was exiled to Switzerland for a few years, which is a pretty good hallmark of quality.

When he turned 19, Zino decided to travel to Cuba and fully immerse himself in the world of cigars. He learned all of the best rolling, cultivation, and blending techniques, and brought them right back to Switzerland with him.

When his parents began to implement his insights, the business exploded, and the name Davidoff became synonymous with quality and luxury.

He invented new smokes, blends – and even the desktop humidor, which revolutionized the industry and allowed customers to store and age their quality cigars at home.

By the 1990s Davidoff had become disillusioned with Cuban production quality as a result of the slipping standards imposed by the Cuban trade embargo and shifted his empire out to the Dominican Republic – where it operates to this day.

Where are Davidoff Cigars From?

Produced in Cuba up until 1990, Davidoff Cigars now operate out of the Dominican Republic.

Each cigar is handcrafted under the stewardship of master blender Hendrik Kelner:

“We cultivate , acquire and process the best tobaccos for wrapper, binder and filler under a strict direction, supervision and control of technical experienced people for the processes and procedures to handle the leaves.”

Hendrik Kelner

The expert team takes advantage of the Dominican Republic’s nutrient-rich volcanic soil and year-round sunshine to produce some of the best quality tobacco in the world.

The world-class conditions and immaculate attention to detail certainly come through when you try their cigars.

What’s the best place to buy Davidoff cigars online?

It’s hard to believe with over 17 million cigar smokers just in the US that there are little more than a dozen credible places to buy cigars online. Now of course there are small shops all over that sell online cigars, but just don’t come up on any broad google search.

Most will let you down somewhere – if they have good shipping, they’re expensive. If they’re the right price, you’ll lack a proper guarantee.

My favorite online cigar store – Famous Smoke Shop -strikes a great balance, and most importantly – they’re reliable.

There’s nothing worse than your cigars arriving late, not showing up at all, or receiving dried-out stogies in terrible condition.
