If you’re looking for a sweet, natural-tasting smoke that doesn’t rely on any gimmicky flavors, this is the pick for you.
Aged Maduros are packed full of smooth and mellow flavor that evolves throughout the lifetime of the stogie.
On a pre-light draw, I get shades of Oak – and once you fire her up, they’re joined by smooth, earthy cocoa and fruity raisin inflections. It’s a perfectly balanced, medium-bodied introduction with just the right amount of complexity.
As I entered the second half of the smoke, I started to cocoa fade and become replaced by slightly more pointed dashes of nuttiness and spice. A definite palate shift from the first half, but still retaining that same mellow feel.
Throughout, there’s an implicit sweetness from the Maduro wrapper that doesn’t feel forced – it’s very natural tasting.
This is a stogie that stays smooth and sweet right the way down to the nub, and is a great companion to a bitter, dark coffee in the morning – plenty of flavor, but mild enough that I’m still going to be able to taste my breakfast.
These handcrafted smokes look imposing and expensive, and despite the apparent roughness of the near-black wrapper, they feel nice and smooth in hand. The build quality is impeccable, with plums of smoke and white ash that burns down crisply in a razor-sharp line.

This smoky-sweet stogie reminds me of sitting around a campfire with my buddies. The fire-cured tobacco brings notes of cocoa and pepper for a unique, tangy flavor that pairs perfectly with whiskey or bourbon.

For a niche stick, construction here is on point. Kentucky Fire Cured gives me the perfect burn every time I light up, with sturdy white ash that lasts for at least a couple of inches.

Delicious chocolatey, nutty, and coffee notes combine for an ever-so-gourmand smoke.

Even on the pre-light draw, you’re picking up notes of sweet licorice and florals. This effect diminishes throughout the lifetime of the smoke, but off the bat, it is pretty strong. This undercurrent makes it taste about 20% like a flavored vape – but in a good way.
Once it’s lit, some of the earthier tobacco notes get a chance to shine. When balanced with the flavored cap, the result is a chocolatey, coffee, mocha concoction.
After a few drags, the sugary tip is mellowed out by the bitterness of the Connecticut wrapper to create something flavorful and well-balanced. The sweetness is still there, for sure, but it’s not as potentially overpowering as the prelight taste would suggest.
In the second half of the smoke, notes of white pepper emerge and grow to a decent prickle towards the end of the smoke. It never becomes overpowering, just keeps things interesting.
In terms of duration, I’d dealt with the Acid Krush within half an hour. That said, I was sort of puffing away, and I imagine if you were smoking with company, you’d stretch it out to perhaps 45 minutes between conversation and sips of a dram.

The Fat Bottom Betty is a great pick for beginners looking to graduate from gas station cigars to something a little heftier. The sweetened tip will divide opinion, but this is a top-tier smoke that ebbs and evolves throughout the 45-minute session.

They’re also chunky. Each cigar comes in at 5” and weighs 54 grams, so the fat bottom reputation certainly isn’t plucked out of thin air.
The Connecticut Maduro leaf wrapper is a beautiful dark brown tone. It’s sleek and smooth, harboring the oils from the tobacco leaf which lend a sheen to the exterior.
When you put a Fat Bottom Betty to your lips, you’ll get a sense of what it’s all about – before you even light it. They use a characteristic sweetened tip, similar to the one Drew Estate use in their Acid line.
The tip had basically worn off by the time I was a third of the way through the cigar. The blend itself is incredibly warm and creamy, with notes of coffee and earthiness interspersed with dark chocolate sweetness. It’s wonderfully balanced with touches of incense and florals that add some sophisticated nuance
Nicaraguan pepper and nutmeg emerge towards the end of the smoke, for a spiced final act that newcomers and veterans alike will appreciate.

A creamy sweetness that delights (but never overpowers), with excellent build quality and a consistent draw throughout the whole smoke.

The Kuba Kuba is a little larger than the Krush Classic, so better for you if you’re looking for a longer session with the boys.
Instead of the prickly pepper, you find at the end of the Krush, you’re treated to warmer spices like cinnamon and cloves.
The idiosyncratic sweetness is still there, but this time it’s a little creamier – not dissimilar to a shot of Bailey’s liquor. Again, the sweetness serves as a complement to the rich tobacco notes, rather than as a substitute to mask the flavor.
The smoke experience is, as I’ve come to expect across the range, stellar. The draw is noticeably consistent, with zero relighting required.

They say blondes have more fun, and you’ll find that to be true again with the Acid Blondie if you prefer lighter tobacco blends.

This one is even sweeter than the Krush and Kuba Kuba due to the sugar syrup gum that holds the cigar together. While the sweetness tends to fade in most Acid cigars, it’s consistent throughout with the Blondie.
It’s more floral and gourmand than the other two Acid picks – think Palma Violet candies and you won’t be far wrong.
The lighter tobacco blend makes the blondie ideal for newer smokier who find other cigars too harsh.

Avanti Cigars stand out through their use of 2-year aged Kentucky/ Tennessee tobacco, dry cured using hickory and oak.

In fact, Avanti is the only large producer in the US that still dry cures their smokes. This process allows the sugars of the leaf to ferment naturally, producing a characteristic light sweetness that I’ve been unable to find elsewhere.
They don’t use any artificial binders, and when the cigars are rolled, they’re left to age for at least a month.
As a result, their smokes are uniquely rich, warm, and spiced.
They offer a range of flavors including vanilla, cherry, and mocha – but my favorite is the licorice-esque “anisette”. It’s a love-it or hate-it flavor, but if you’re into aniseed it’s a must-try.

When I think of gas station cigars, Backwoods are the first that come to mind.

The cigars themselves are hardly the sleekest things. They look a little ugly and misshapen – but for me, that’s part of the charm.
Backwoods are solid, dependable, and probably the most popular gas station cigar in the US. The purists may look down on them, but there’s a reason you can find them in every gas station. The value for money here is immense.
This classic American brand is one of the only machine-made cigars with a broadleaf wrapper. You’re getting gas station prices and convenience, without having to compromise with a man-made wrapper.
Backwoods use Cuban seed tobacco as the filler and come in a variety of flavors. They range from spicy, deep, and smokey all the way to fruity sweet.
My personal favorites are the Honey Berry Backwoods. They’re sweet without being cloying, and with enough berry-sharpness to keep things interesting. I love the nice, big body on the smoke – they’re a solid 8/10 smoke for me.
