Backwoods are hardly the sleekest things. They look a little ugly and misshapen – but for me, it’s the flavor that sets them apart from other gas station cigars.
Backwoods are solid and dependable. Purists may look down on them, but the value for money here is immense.
If you’ve seen Backwoods behind the counter, you’ll know that they come in a bunch of flavors, ranging from spicy, deep, and smokey all the way to fruity and sweet.
Honey Bourbon Backwoods
Honey Berry Backwoods
Russian Cream Backwoods
My personal favorites are the Honey Berry Backwoods. They’re sweet without being cloying, and with enough berry-sharpness to keep things interesting. I love the nice, big body on the smoke – they’re a solid 8/10 smoke for me.
They’re closely followed by Honey Bourbon Backwoods, which are incredibly smooth and creamy. They’re a little less sweet than the Honey Berry variant, which makes them a better pick if you like smoking a couple in quick succession.
While I’d recommend these two as a good starting point, it’s really a matter of personal preference. I’ll walk you through all the flavors available in the USA today to help you make the right call – so let’s get into it.
The Best-tasting Backwoods Available Today
Honey Berry Backwoods
This is my favorite flavor of Backwoods. There is sweetness that fills the senses without overpowering or tasting artificial, balanced out by a streak of berry sharpness that I can’t get enough of.

I love these gourmand smokes – but if you can’t rock with sweetness, you’d be better off with Original Backwoods or Black Russians.

Honey Bourbon Backwoods
Honey Bourbon Backwoods are a little less sweet, but it’s certainly still there about 60% of the way.

These smokes taste creamier and smooth than the Honey Berry’s because that bourbon note rounds out the honey flavor with more stiffness. It reminds me a lot of Jack Daniels Honey – still sweet, but only in proper proportion to the whiskey.
It’s a mouthwatering flavor that can get pretty addictive. I’ve been known to get through a couple of these in the space of an hour – they’re that good.

Russian Cream Backwoods
Russian Creams are smooth with a milky quality and an ever-so-slight touch of sweetness.
They pair very well with black coffee to balance out the bitterness, and I’d recommend them to anyone looking for something less overtly sugary than Honey Berries (or any of the Honey variants for that matter).

Original Backwoods
These are the OG smokes that started it all. Original Backwoods are all about rugged, smokey tobacco flavor, and can be a good place to start if you’re not sure which flavor to go for. Backwoods are a little like IPAs – an acquired taste – so it’s not a bad idea to start with something neutral and branch out from there.

Honey Backwoods
Honey Backwoods are pretty sweet overall, with a mild body of smoke that beginners will appreciate. They remind me a lot of Sugar Puff cereal and should be considered as a sweet treat rather than a luxury smoke. Ideal for beginners who aren’t comfortable diving in with the straight tobacco flavor of Original Backwoods.

Dark Stout Backwoods
If you’re a fan of Guinness, this might be the pick for you. Dark Stout Backwoods bring that familiar malty sweetness and hoppy bitterness you find in The Black Stuff for a smooth and creamy smoke. At least these stogies won’t leave you seeing double.

Black Russian Backwoods
Black Russians have a dark and rich flavor that reminds me a little of aniseed. To me, they’re a little heavy to be smoked on a regular, casual basis – but if you’re looking for something more brooding and dominant, they might be the best backwoods for you.

Sweet Aromatic Backwoods
These are a great smoke for sitting around the campfire – rustic and rough, but with a sweetness that smooths everything out while you’re having beers with the boys.

Banana Backwoods
This is a bit of an off-the-wall flavor, but Banana Backwoods really work. They remind me of those little foam bananas you can buy in candy stores – sugary sweet wrapped up in a ripe banana cloud.
