Let’s get this out of the way: even the best cologne to attract ladies is not going to magically get you laid.
A designer fragrance is a string to your bow, not a magic bullet.
Your gentlemanly aura is made up of your outfit, your wit, your charisma, and your expertise. Your scent is just another piece of the pie.
It’s great for first impressions and attracting attention, but you’ll have to take it from there.
Now that’s out the way- what is it women look for in a cologne?
You’ll need something that has a bit of personality. Something that represents you, and gives a little hint of the sort of Gent you are.
It’s also important to pick the right scent for the right occasion. You don’t want to blow your date’s head off, but if you’re not detectable what’s the point?
I’ll cover all of this and more, as well as my top picks for tried and tested head turners.
Best Colognes to Get You Laid – The 7Gents Guide
Jean Paul Gaultier Ultra Male
Ultra Male does exactly what it says on the tin. This is a compliment pulling club banger, rife with playful bubblegum sweetness and a dessert-style gourmand.
The opening reminds me of freshly baked pears with vanilla. It’s creamy, soft, and unique enough for signature scent consideration.
In the base, there’s some warmth and depth from spices and woodsy tones. They add a woodsy, masculine foundation for the inviting sweet notes to perform on. It’s a perfect balancing act that reminds me of crème brûlée from a high-class patisserie.
Some people associate Ultra Man exclusively with young lotharios, but I’d have to disagree. While this is a fragrance that will reap rewards in the club, it’s also fine for cuddles with your girlfriend if applied in moderation.
One spay to the chest and another to the neck is enough for most situations, to avoid the sweetness becoming cloying and overpowering.
Ultra Man is a case study in seductive mass appeal, and definitely, one to consider if impressing the opposite sex is on your agenda.

Aventus by Creed
I’m not one for hyperbole, but this is common knowledge: Aventus is up there with the best colognes in the world, period. Everyone should experience it at least once if only to see the effect it has on women.
It screams class and confidence. Aventus just smells rich. It’s an iconic blend that has been imitated by hundreds of efforts, but there’s no way to cheat your way into this sort of impression.
Like an exclusive nightclub, you have to pay the cost of admission. But it’s worth it.
The opening is full of juicy pineapple and blackcurrant, which shifts to reveal deeper woods and smokiness from birch and patchouli. The drydown is musky and mysterious, with a touch of vanilla to hammer home that sense of class and refinement.
The performance is phenomenal. You’ll get 10 hours of longevity out of Aventus with no bother, it’s top-tier. Apply as part of your morning routine and you’ll still be projecting at post-work cocktails.
The dry down is mysterious and musky, a little like the fruit from the opening but with some oakmoss sprinkled in. The whole ride lasts around 10 hours, so you get plenty of bang for your buck. Aventus can survive a full day at the office and still be projecting at post-work drinks.
Yes, it is expensive. Yes, it’s become a victim of its own success (if you want something truly unique, look elsewhere). But Aventus is the watermark that all other designer fragrances seek to reach – and very few manage.
Top notes are Pineapple, Bergamot, Black Currant and Apple; middle notes are Birch, Patchouli, Moroccan Jasmine and Rose; base notes are Musk, oak moss, Ambergris and Vanille.

Tobacco Vanille by Tom Ford
Before we start, I’ll come clean. Tom Ford’s Tobacco Vanille is my personal favorite cologne, or at least top three. I love it, and what will follow are the ramblings of an unapologetic fanboy.
Tobacco Vanille is a master classic minimalist fragrance. Its sole concern is presenting the two primary accords in the best possible light. This is an exercise in getting out of the way and letting the stars of the show shine.
The vanilla is sweet without being sickly, with a touch of smoke to keep things masculine. The tobacco is bright, rich and spiced, with enough vibrancy to keep everyone in the vicinity hooked.
Together, they’re unstoppable. This is, to my nose, a perfect cologne.
It tends to last around 10 hours but can reach the heady heights of 12 in warmer weather. If you’re looking for clean-cut, uncomplicated sophistication, Tobacco Vanille is a must-smell.

|Middle Notes:||Tonka Bean, Tobacco Flower, Vanilla and Cocao|
|Base Notes||Woodsy Notes and Dried Fruit|
1 Million by Paco Rabanne
This was my go-to fragrance for the ladies at college. Many an evening spent at the student bar wearing this, with uncharacteristically positive levels of success.
1 million by Paco Rabanne is perfect for lively and energetic Gents on the younger side. The beautiful citrusy, spiced combo manages to smell expensive without being pompous or self-important.
Disclaimer: This is cinnamon central. If you’re not a fan, I’d steer clear.
This bold, Christmassy spice makes 1 million a perfect cologne for winter. It will warm you – and hopefully, others – up very nicely.
Just keep in mind that this stuff is strong. 1 million gets a bit of a bad rep because some young people tend to overspray, so make sure you keep things subtle. Just a couple of spritzes will last up to 10 hours.

|Base Notes:||Patchouli, Woodsy Notes, Leather and Amber|
Polo Red Extreme by Ralph Lauren
Polo Red Extreme will put enough pep in your step to boost your charisma and energy when chatting to ladies.
It revolves around a tart, sharp cranberry note, which is incredibly lively. It’s sweet and sour at the same time and smells deliciously fresh.
This, coupled with energizing coffee and zingy grapefruit, is enough to add jet fuel to any interaction.
But it’s not all about zip and zing. Red Extreme is rounded out by darker and smokey wood accords in the base. These added elements of mystery and seriousness stop Extreme Red from becoming a full-throttle, sunshine and rainbows fruity scent.
It’s got enough personality to rock on a date at the dive bar, but also subtle enough for a candlelit dinner.
|Top Notes:||Blood Orange, Cranberry and Coffee|
|Middle Notes:||Sage and Chocolate|
|Base Notes:||Amber and Woodsy Notes|
L’Homme by Prada
This woodsy cologne is perfect for the refined, mature gentleman. It’s elegant and clean, but with unmistakable masculinity.
The confident, deep base of cedar, sandalwood, and patchouli is livened up by touches of prickly pepper and cardamom in the tops notes.
The other major player here is an identifying streak of violet, which runs through the cologne like a racing stripe on a sports car – bold, blatant, but not out of place.
It reminds me of Dior Homme, but a lighter, fresher version. It’s less clumsy, but thankfully just as masculine.
|Top Notes:||Cardamom, Neroli and Black Pepper|
|Middle Notes:||Iris, Violet and Geranium|
|Base Notes||Cedar, Amber, Sandalwood and Patchouli|
La Nuit De L’Homme by Yves Saint Laurent
The nighttime is the right time. La Nuit De L’Homme (or “the night of the man”) is like a spicier, more intense version of Prada L’Homme.
This is for when you’re going out, dressed to the nines, and don’t mind being the center of attention.
Soothing aromatics like lavender and bergamot are punctuated by cardamom warmth and vetiver freshness, producing a complex cologne that evolves and intrigues.
It’s been a bestseller for over a decade, and not by accident. La Nuit de L’Homme is tried, tested, and trusted by thousands of Gents worldwide because it works.
Women like a man who isn’t afraid to make an entrance. This YSL offer guarantees that while keeping things classy.
|Middle Notes:||Lavender, Virginia Cedar and Bergamot|
|Base Notes:||Vetiver and Caraway|
How to Choose the Best Cologne to Attract Women
If you want the ladies to notice your cologne, there are a few important things to consider:
The perfect cologne for a whiskey bar could be a disaster at a festival and vice versa.
Intimate indoor spaces call for something subtle. You don’t want to be that guy who is overpowering everyone with their fragrance. “Look at me, notice me” isn’t a good look”.
If your cologne is overbearing, you’ll find women will compliment you on it because they think they’re supposed to – not because they actually like it.
They notice you’ve made an effort, overdone it, and feel embarrassed for you.
This is particularly noticeable in a club environment, where the men feel compelled to compete with each other. It results in death-spiral of cologne dowsing- and is not the way of a Gent.
If you’re on an outdoor date, you’ll need something with a bit more power to compete with the ambient fragrances carried on the breeze.
Similarly, consider the heat. Hotter temperatures carry scent further and project more intensely as your cologne will evaporate and diffuse more easily.
Most cologne descriptions will explain which season the fragrance is best suited for, so be sure to check it suits your needs before committing to a purchase.
Your note profile will depend on what sort of Gent you are.
Are you all about youthful energy, excitement, and spontaneity?
Or are you more of a cool, collected leader?
Either way, you’ll want your cologne to make sense in the context of your personality.
Younger guys tend to lean towards sharper notes like citruses and spice, while older chaps might prefer more traditionally masculine accords of leather or woods.
The best way to find out what suits you is to go to the perfume section of your local department store and try a bunch. Have fun experimenting, and make a note of which notes resonate with you.
Once you’ve got an idea of what notes you like, you can use them to guide your search. Combine your favorite elements to find a cologne that feels like it was made for you.
Until then, the colognes I’ve included in this guide are all relatively crowd-pleasing. They’re all unique with particular strengths, but still tried-and-tested best sellers with mass appeal.
