Dior Homme Cologne Review (2022) – The Best Ever?

Dior Homme is a fresh, sensual fragrance that everyone should try at least once. It does a great job of presenting a classic palate of woodsy and sensual notes in a modern, cozy blend.

It manages that balance masculine power and strength against more tender nuances for a representation that feels gentlemanly rather than reductively macho.

Homme is a refreshingly simple cologne from Dior that relies on the quality and balance of classic ingredients, rather than gimmicky notes that aim to be the “next big thing”.

Tried-and-tested evocative combinations become popular for a reason, and Dior does a great job introducing them to a new generation here.

A refreshing, simple and straightforward masculine cologne

Classic fragrance that still feels modern and relevant in 2022

Very clean smelling – this fragrance is unlikely to offend

Not going to win any awards for ground-breaking creativity

A little expensive. Nothing shocking for the quality, but this is not a budget cologne.

The scent is quite linear and doesn’t evolve or change much over time

First Impressions

The standard-issue bottle looks great. It’s like something out of a Bond movie. Clean cut, refined, with the amber-ish liquid playing off the black like a gold Rolex tucked beneath the sleeve of a black suit.

It’s available in 50 and 100 ml bottles and it pays to buy in bulk. I noticed that the 100ml variant works out about 15 – 20% cheaper per ml if you’re into crunching numbers.

My sample bottle was a little less imposing on the bathroom shelf, but I still managed to get a sense of the brand identity.

What Does Dior Homme Smell Like?

Dior perfumes always smell perfectly blended and amazingly executed. This one is no different. It is a citrusy, fresh out-the-shower fragrance; very gentle and tranquil. The pink pepper also gives it a nice pop.

The overall sense can be defined in three words.

Expensive. French. Masculine

Dior Homme smells rugged and woodsy, but not at the expense of class. The woods are very prevalent in the heart and the base, but not in an aggressive or overpowering way. The primary cashmere wood note isn’t as biting as something like a stiff oak. It’s more comforting and warm than earthy or deep, let’s say.

It’s also livened up by refreshing pops of fresh citrus and the prickle of pink pepper. These levelers offer enough texture to prevent Dior Homme from descending into a wave of woodsiness. There’s enough going on to keep the cologne from feeling stagnant, or one-dimensional.

Top Notes:Bergamot, Pink Pepper and Elemi
Middle Notes:Cashmere Wood, Atlas Cedar and Patchouli
Base Notes:Iso E Super, Haitian Vetiver and White Musk

How Long Does Dior Homme Last?

Dior Homme’s performance is above average, for sure. I’ll pick up compliments for the first 5 hours or so.

Personally, I still notice the fragrance on myself for 8 hours. This isn’t one of those scents that you’ll get nose-blind too easily, which is a bonus.

That sort of performance is enough to carry me through a full work day, which is my usual threshold for pass/fail. Realistically, you don’t need a cologne to last any longer than that.

When Should I Wear Dior Homme?

Dior Homme is a bit of a swiss army knife when it comes to masculine fragrances. It’s a very versatile cologne that can be worn for pretty much any occasion.

It’s a great way to add a masculine undercurrent to your day, from lounging at home to dominating in the workplace. The key is all in how much you apply; 1-2 sprays for casual situations, or 3-4 sprays for more of a statement.

The woodsy and citrus tones are well balanced and lend themselves to pretty much every season. This is a great “dumb reach” cologne to help you project authority no matter the situation.

Is Dior Homme Worth It?

Overall, Dior Homme is a 9/10 recommend buy – particularly if you’re new to colognes. When you’re starting out, you want something versatile. It’s better (and less expensive) to pick up 2 or 3 colognes that cover all situations than try and pick 10 for each specific moment.

Dior Homme is more about fundamental masculinity than any particular season or environment.

For me, I’d settle on Dior Homme as my “cover all” masculine pick. Think work environments, coffee trips. Then I’d supplement that with one that’s specifically light and breezy (a classic summer cologne) and then something that’s a little more aggressive and brooding (a winter cologne).

Failing that, you could just buy Dior Homme and have that be your signature scent.

Where to Buy Dior Homme

I’ve used Nordstrom for a couple of years, and they’re my favorite. I enjoy the peace of mind of knowing that everything is taken care off; the product is authentic and will show up when I expect it to, for a fair price.

Dior Homme is a crowd-pleasing scent that you’re probably going to love – but in the worst case, Nordstrom offers the most flexible returns policy I’ve come across when buying colognes online.

They’re perfectly happy for you to try your order and send it back if it’s not for you. As long as you haven’t used half the bottle, that is.

Failing that, you can always go through Amazon. They’re probably the most stocked place to buy colognes online, and I love that the reviews for each vendor are public so I know exactly what I’m getting.

Also, Amazon has got shipping down to a fine art. If you order a cologne available with Prime delivery on a Thursday, there’s a good chance it will be in your hands by the weekend. It’s that rapid.

Bleu de Chanel

Bleu de Chanel is a modern classic. This distinctive cologne is spicy and fresh, but also warm and musky.

It’s a great example of a fragrance that doesn’t rely on one or two standout notes, and instead generates its full effect from the careful balance of its constituent elements.

Bleu de Chanel starts with a refreshing grapefruit note that makes you sit up and take notice. Combined with incense and ginger, the result is an energizing composition that tingles the nostrils.

The vetiver wood is poised against the spicier, fruity elements and they do a great job of mellowing each other out. It’s a similar sense in Dior Homme, but the woods there are a little tougher and more pervasive.

So if you find the woody notes of Dior Homme a little too intense, check out Bleu de Chanel for something more delicate.

Top Notes:Grapefruit, Lemon, Mint and Pink Pepper
Middle Notes:Ginger, Nutmeg, Jasmine, and Iso E Super
Base Notes:Incense, Vetiver, Cedar, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Labdanum and White Musk.

Compared to Dior Homme, Prada L’Homme is lighter and fresher. Prada colognes revolve around signature notes of iris and amber, and they serve to temper the woodsy base in L’Homme.

The result is a clean and fresh cologne that will bring elegance and sophistication to every Gent.

Like Dior Homme, Prada L’Homme pairs perfectly with a crisp black suit and is an exercise to taking things back to basics. Classic simplicity.

Top Notes:Carrot seeds, Cardamom, Neroli, and Black pepper
Middle Notes:Iris, Mate, Violet, and Geranium
Base Notes:Cedar, Amber, Sandalwood, and Patchouli.
